Client question: What is hot for hair this season?

I got a question submitted through the “Ask Mitzi a Question” section of the website: “What is hot for hair right now? Specifically, short hair?” Well, first you must realize that no matter how much you might love a haircut or want to be on the cutting edge, it might not be right for your face shape, hair type, lifestyle or personality. A lot of people like the way a style looks on the model – her face or hair color. Yours will look different because -light bulb moment here- you are not that person! A great example of this is Victoria Beckham. When she cut her hair in that A-line bob, everyone and their grandmother cut their hair in that style; the problem is, there were a lot of people that could not pull that look off for one reason or another. It is KEY to talk to your stylist expecting him/her to be completely honest with you so that you can achieve the perfect look that is tailored specifically for you. That being said, your stylist should also be able to work with whatever style you like to give you something similar that fits your needs. Know how much time you are willing to commit to styling and what products and tools you are willing to use.

To answer the question specifically, bangs are totally in. Whether they are straight down and more blunt, angled, heavy, piecy, fringy, this is the point: bangs work on a large majority of people, adding softness and a playfulness that meets all age demographics. Let’s be honest; bangs frame beautiful eyes, make your ponytail have a nice style, etc. but they also cover up any wrinkles on the forehead that we might want concealed. You should think about them long and hard before your appointment and discuss them with your stylist before the big cut.

The second part of the question was “what is in for short hair.” There are many things that are in for short hair, including a version of the pixie that leaves a little length at the front and the back with lots of interior layers. Short hair doesn’t always mean harsh or severe or “boyish”. It can be fun and whimsical, and it holds a great style all day. Regardless of the short style, you should know that a shorter style will require more maintenance – approximately every four weeks to keep your hair looking its best and performing as you want it to.

It all boils down to this: everyone can be in style and follow a hot trend. However, be realistic. Your hair might not do exactly what you want, but together with your stylist, you should be able to get a fabulous new look that is all the rage for the season!

By the way: I love the questions! Keep them coming, and I will keep the answers coming back to you. Thanks!
