Email question: What to do with naturally greasy hair

I got a great email question today: "I have a friend who has naturally greasy hair.  She showers at night, and by the next morning her hair is greasy.  What should she do?"

This is such a common question that we hear in the salon!  There are some basics you should know regarding greasy hair.

First - oily hair at the scalp should be washed on a regular basis, but you want to use something with mint in it, like Aveda's Rosemary Mint Shampoo, or something with tee tree oil, or even a good clarifying shampoo.  Now, if she has color, this complicates things a little because a shampoo to detoxify the hair can sometimes be stripping to color.  As long as you don't use a harsher shampoo for the first week or two of fresh color, you should be okay.

Second - just because your ends might need conditioning doesn't mean your scalp has to have it.  Try to focus any conditioner on the bottom half to third of the hair.  Hair at the scalp is newer and in better condition, therefore, needing less conditioning.

Third - does she put anything in it after getting out of the shower?  Products are tricky and should be used sparingly and with caution on hair that soaks up oil easily.

Fourth - she can always try using a little bit of baby powder in the morning to dry up a little of the oil and give a little grip to the hair.  Don't use too much of this, if you try it, but it helps for a period of time.  There are also products, like Aveda's Volumizing potion, that are a powder to add volume and absorb oil.

LAST - if all else fails, she might need to wash in the morning, following the other basics for oily hair.  This should help her feel fresher and look fresher all day long.

Don't despair!  Once you know how to deal with it, managing it will be much less frustrating.
