An AVEDA Concept Salon

Revisitng some old "friends"

Why does it feel like there is only one way to get from A to B, and it is too hard  for us to do?  I think often clients feel like stylists can give them great hair, but they feel ill-equipped to do it at home.  We often hear, "I can't use a round brush," "I don't know how to get loose waves," "How do I change up my look," etc.  Rethink the way you feel about this - you CAN do it, you just have to find what works for you to get from A to B!

Following a relaxing vacation, I recently was on Talk of the Town where I discussed hair trends for the spring and using alternative methods to achieve desired looks.  Basically, we are seeing use of older styling methods revamped for modern hair to create loose curls, tousled hair and fresh cuts.

Take hot rollers and Velcro rollers, for instance: they are still great for body and curls, but to give a twist on it, literally twist big sections of hair and then roll the hair up on a roller.  The effect is a messier looser curl that doesn't feel dated.  We also see the flat iron being used not just for a straight look but to create curl and wave; this can be a little tricky, but it gives a great look.  We are even seeing the sponge roller back in play; this handy tool is great to sleep on and shake out in the morning.  Just make sure with this technique that you use big sections that are uneven to avoid a Shriley Temple effect.  Now, let us not forget the curling iron.  While you can curl the old fashioned way for curl, try wrapping sections of hair around the outside of the barrel instead of clamping the hair - watch your hands so you don't burn them, though.  By doing this, you will get a messy wavy look that, with a little product, is that beach hair we like to have in the spring and summer.

If you aren't good with a round brush, that is okay - try rollers or a curling or flat iron.  A lot of times, the look is very similar.  And by trying different things with different tools, you will open up a new world of possibilities.  And, if you still are a little intimidated, talk to your stylist!  S/he will be more than happy to show you some of these techniques and products to help create the finished look.

Remember, the road from A to B is not paved in stone!
